Although you have an incredibly
powerful project management software application on your computer, the
efficiencies of project plans do not come from simply inputting information
into the software. The most powerful efficiencies come from the work you do
during the Initiation and Planning phases of your project plan before you
even enter a single task into the software application. After the project schedule is completed and
a baseline is saved, you will need all the tools available to you in
Microsoft Project to successfully keep your project on track during the
Execution and Control phases. During
the life cycle of your project, you will want to view, analyze, print and
communicate the data that Microsoft Project stores in your project plan file.
You will use this data to monitor the progress of your project and use this
information to keep it on time, within budget and in scope. When the project is completed, you will use
Microsoft Project data to analyze how well, or not so well, you did on the
project. Final reports can be run and valuable lessons learned process can be
completed using the results you recorded in your project plan.
In order to make this entire
process more efficient, you must continue to study and learn project
management methodologies and techniques. During this time, you need to learn
the features, tools and techniques of the Microsoft Project software tool in
order to be successful building and managing your project plans. The software
tool is not intuitive and is wrought with a host of settings and processes
that can create a great amount of frustration for the uninformed user.
