By participating in Plain Writing Skills, you will have the opportunity to fine-tune your written communication to meet the Plain Language criteria.

As a government professional, you prepare important business and technical documents. Paricipants will learn techniques for writing clear and meaningful documents that meet the Plain Language requirements.

Writing Policies and Procedures

Effective policies and procedures (P & P) have a profound effect on organizations.

When they are in place, systems and people operate properly to accomplish goals and objectives. Effective policy implementation saves time and reduces legal concerns.

In this workshop, participants will learn tools and techniques in preparing important policy and procedure documents.

Mastering Business Writing

To be effective in today’s workplace, employees need to strengthen and update their business writing skills.

The Mastering Business Writing course design provides the necessary tools, practice opportunities, and resources to enhance employee skills.

Leadership Skills for the Project Professional

Leadership Skills for the Project Professional is a 3-day, instructor-facilitated learning course designed to develop the leadership attributes of the project/program management practitioner.

The basic premise of the course is to facilitate the migration from a manager to a leader in the project or program environment.

Because the project/program manager serves as the primary liaison between organizational leadership (i.e., upper management) and the project team, s/he must possess and employ the soft skills (“artistic” vs. scientific) required to lead a team.  In this course, participants will be introduced to common leadership principles that must be applied in the project environment.  After an introduction to the better practices for each learning unit, course attendees will apply these principles via relevant individual and team exercises. The course will cover the following project leadership aspects:

SQL Introduction (2-day)

This course teaches the basics of the Structured Query Language (SQL) Language in a fast paced and hands-on environment.

The course begins discussion of relational concepts and terminology and quickly moves into a practical discussion of data retrieval and manipulation using SQL.

Advanced Perl Programming

This course begins with a discussion of complex data structures, showing how references can be used to build structures that are multi-dimensional combinations of arrays and hashes.

This course begins with a discussion of complex data structures, showing how references can be used to build structures that are multi-dimensional combinations of arrays and hashes.  Next, data manipulation techniques are discussed.  This includes advanced techniques for searching, sorting and data conversion.  This discussion continues with parsing techniques, including special requirements for HTML and XML files.  Next, Object-Oriented programming is discussed from a Perl perspective.  This discussion carries into the development of packages and modules.  In this section, students learn how to develop modules that are suitable for general distribution, including CPAN.  This is supported by the next topic on Plain Old Documentation, or POD, which is the Perl standard for documentation.  Utilities for converting POD files to other formats, such as man pages and HTML, are included.  Finally, students are taught how to integrate C/C++ Programming Language functions into Perl programs and how to embed Perl programs into C/C++ programs.
